AdSense Tip #8: Increase the number of ads, but not too much

If you have a lot of text on a page, use multiple AdSense units. You can use up to three AdSense units on a page, two AdSense search boxes and one unit of ad links.

Link units allow the user to refine what they’re interested in. So if they may not be interested in specific ads on your page, they might be interested in a particular topic, and by clicking on a link unit and a link in the link unit, they’ll be able to specify that they’re interested in that specific topic and get a lot more options and variety on the ads that might appear.

AdSense for Search allows visitors to search Google.com or your sites (up to 3 domains). You earn money whenever they click on the ads that come up on the search results. If you click the Open search results in a new browser window checkbox in the AdSense for Search settings, you won’t lose your visitors.

AdSense Tip #9: Preview Google ads

You can find out what ads will be served by Google AdSense if you install Google AdSense Preview Tool, a very simple tool available only for Internet Explorer 6.0. Click to advertiser sites without generating invalid clicks, and easily add their URLs to your URL filter list. Because AdSense uses geo-targeting, Google serves different ads for other countries. Instead of faking your IP or travelling abroad to test your ads, use this AdSense tool to see what ads see your visitors from France, Germany or other countries.

There may be no Google AdSense ads available for your webpage, so Googlw will display Public Service Ads. You can hide them using alternate colors or images. Make sure you include the image in a simple html file as a link (use target=”_top”). The image size should be the same as the dimension of AdSense units. In the alternate url box, enter the absolute url of the html file.

* Don’t place Google ads on sites that include prohibited content (e.g.: adult sites)

* Don’t use AdSense ads on the same page with similar ads (e.g.: Yahoo Publisher Network)

AdSense Tip #11: Show images above or next to your ads

Placing images above AdSense ads is not necessarily prohibited by program policies. However, depending on the method of implementation this could be considered encouraging users to click on ads. So you should include a border line between the ads and the images. Don’t show specific products in your images, in order not to mislead the visitors. Just use generic images that will increase the visibility of your ads.

AdSense Tip #14: Your Google ads should be visible

Make sure your text ads are visible to the surfers in all screen formats. If you put the ads in a table, give sufficient breathing room, i.e. proper cell padding and cell spacing to make the ads stand out from the rest of your content.

AdSense Tip #15: Use AdSense channels

You can categorize the content of your website into channels and then track your performance. This way you can experiment with different types of ads and see which is performing the best. Instead of buying an AdSense tracker, you can enter the most important pages in your site and see how they are doing. Create up to 200 channels for AdSense.

The tips I am about to tell you are what worked for me, but I encourage you to try different things as each site is unique.

1. Colour and Position

This is probably the optimization which is mentioned most regularly, but it’s for good reason. You really should experiment with different ad positions and different color combination’s. Each time you make a change leave the ads for a week and see how your earnings alter. Make a note of what works and then try something new. I was always sceptical when I read these comments before but since I have started playing with positioning my adsense revenue has multiplied by 4 times (crazy but true). Personally I’ve found that blending ads into the site works very well but it’s not the only way and you should try all the combination’s you can think of.

2. Different date, different adverts

This is one of my favourites and I intend to write a post on how to do this next week, for now I will stick to the what and why.

In simple terms, the older the page the more ads you show.

Despite the fact that I have advertising, I don’t actually like it. I have 0 to very few adverts on new posts, and increase the ads on older ones. This isn’t so obvious here on Binary Moon, but on Binary Joy I have gone a little crazy – but there is a method to my madness. The theory is that older posts will be more appealing to search engines, and visitors who come from search engines are more likely to click on ads. Another side effect is that I “reward” regular visitors by not annoying them with adverts, so I feel this is a good compromise. As I said above I’ll go into this one in more detail next week (with code).

3. Content Targeting

This one is a very simple change and is ridiculously straight forward to implement. Google have a simple comment tag that you can place around your primary content, and this is what your ads will be targeted to.

The idea is that you place these comments around your core page content. That is, the content which is mostly text, and which best reflects the content of your site. On a blog this will generally be the main post content. The reason you do this is so that the adverts don’t target irrelevant content such as the links in your sidebar.

You can also add regions you want Google to ignore. I haven’t used these myself but they are something I intend to try in the not too distant future. You can read more on the section targeting page of the Google Adsense help.

4. Referrals

Google Referrals don’t make me a huge amount of money, but I like to include them on all my sites. Currently I only use one referral package and it only displays in Internet Explorer on the PC. It’s for the Firefox browser, and earns me roughly a dollar for every new install I generate. Some sneaky css removes the ad for Firefox users so that they don’t get pestered with unnecessary adverts.

To do the show/ hide css on your refferal code all I do is have a div with my referral button in it, which I hide. I then use conditional css comments to load some css to display the advert in IE.

I’ve put together a simple example of what I mean below. Just copy and paste the code below into a new htm document and then view it in IE and Firefox. In IE you will see the ad block at the top of the page, in Firefox is “magically” disappears.

5. SEO and Content

I get about 75% of my traffic from search engines and, in my opinion, search engine visitors are the ones most likely to click on adverts, far more so than the regular visitors (which ties into the date based adverts above). Search engine visitors are on a journey to find some information, if they can’t find what they want on my site then they might as well find it on one of my advertisers sites, and that’s the good thing about contextual advertising – the ads are relevant to my readers.

1. Write and submit articles to article directories. This is a great techniques that not only brings traffic, but also builds back links to your site. The articles have to be unique, interesting and submitted to multiple directories. I am testing the services of an article submission company right now. They claim that they submit an article with two links in the author box to 865 different article directories. The cost is reasonable and I expect a large number of back links to be registered by search engines. If this submission would be successful, then I would repeat this process at least three to four times a month.

2. Use answers.yahoo.com to your advantage. It is very easy to get registered with answers.yahoo.com. Once registered, you would be able to answer questions that other folks post and add links to your sites in the body of the answers. I am getting good traffic from answers.yahoo.com.

3. If your site is related to video, then create an account on veoh.com and start posting comments. Include links to your sites in the comments you post. This would give you traffic plus back links. Just be careful and do not overdo it. If you post too many links/comments at once then your account will be deleted.

4. Create a video about your site or service and post it on YouTube.com. You will get good traffic and strong back links. One of my websites got PR2 within a month from the date I created it after I uploaded several videos to YouTube.com. Hint: when writing a video description, make sure to include the url of your site on the first line.

5. Post in forums and add links to your sites to your signature. I am getting a couple of hundreds visits from forums.digitalpoint.com a week alone.

6. Post quality comments on other peoples’ blogs. This approach would give your traffic and a huge number of back links.

7. Submit your site/blog to directories. Do not do it yourself as it takes a huge amount of time. Use one of many directory submission services on forums.digitalpoint.com. Just yesterday I submitted my OBlife.com to 1,100 directories for just 18$.

8. Add a bookmark button to each page of your site.

9. Create custom 404 pages. Most of my websites redirect to the home page when 404 page is requested. Thus I do not lose the visitor, visitor gets to see my website instead.

10. Create an RSS feed and burn it with FeedBurner.

11. Add a “tell-a-friend” form to your pages.

12. Use social bookmarking sites to promote your pages. I am getting hundreds of visitors a day from StumbleUpon alone.

13. Email Marketing. Create a list. Mail it and provide offers or incentives that drive people to your site.

Traffic generation is not a hard job at all. You just need to make a checklist and decide which activities you want to use for your sites.

With the economy still on shaky ground, many common investment vehicles have taken a beating over the past several months. Stocks, bonds and commodities have all been affected, most experiencing steep price declines. Even precious metals such as gold and silver have not been untouched. In the case of gold, prices have recently started to break out to the upside over the past several weeks. If you’re considering investing in the precious metal, you’ll need to decide how you will purchase your gold holdings. Below are four common options to invest in gold and advantages and disadvantages of each:

Gold Bullion

This is the actual metal, typically available in the form of bars or coins in various weights. Bars, available from Credit Suisse and other suppliers, are generally the least expensive option in owning the actual metal. You can also opt for gold coins which will normally be more expensive if they are part of a collector’s series.

Pros: Owning gold in this form is the purest form of ownership and offers a hedge in the event of a financial collapse.

Cons: The biggest risk of owning the actual metal is theft or other catastrophic loss if it is kept in your home. It is advisable to rent a safety deposit box to store your gold to guard against theft.

Pooled Accounts

These are like a gold bank account in that your gold is held in a vault along with other owners. Fees are generally lees than 1% of the market price of your holdings making this a cost efficient method of owning bullion. Depending on your provider, accounts are either “allocated” or “unallocated.” In an allocated account a specific number of gold bars are allocated to you. You also pay additional storage and insurance fees. In an unallocated account, you’re asigned a sum of gold, not the actual bars. There are generally no additional insurance or storage fees with unallocated accounts.The markup per ounce is usually less than 1% of gold’s current market price, making this cheaper than owning physical bullion.

Pros: Generally recognized as the most secure form of owning gold, since the metal is securely store in a vault and regularly audited. You also retain the option of having your gold shipped to you upon your request.

Cons: Fees paid in allocated accounts will add up over time. In unallocated accounts, the gold is held in the providers name and is at rick in the event the provider goes under, including your gold.

Exchange-Traded Funds or ETFs

Shares in ETFs trade like stocks on an exchange. Each share represents a pre-defined factional ounce of gold. These shares are backed by the actual metal which is held in vaults in locations throughout the world. The price of these shares closely track the actual price of gold.

Pros: A low cost of entry and high degree of security are the two main advantages of owning shares in gold ETFs. Liquidity is another benefit since buying and selling is easily handled through your stock broker.

Cons: Taxes. The government taxes capital gains on gold ETFs at a flat 28%, almost twice the normal log term capital gains rate on stocks. You also pay managements fees of approximately 0.4% which adds to the cost of this form of ownership.

Mining Stocks

Another option is to consider the common stock of the gold mining companies. While you don’t own actual gold, you do participate in the success of the companies that actually acquire the gold Also the risk in associated with rising an falling prices are spread across all the available gold the mining company has, both mined and still in the ground.

Pros: This options generally gives you the most bang for your investment dollar. You will usually have to commit twice as much money in bullion or ETFs to get the same level of exposure as you get with the stock of mining companies.

Cons: As with investing in any company’s stock, you are exposed to the overall financial performance of the company in addition the the fluctuations of the gold itself.

Read what the other forum members have to say before you post anything. Get to know something about your fellow members. By reading the past entries, the topic you have a question about probably has been covered and answered on the forum.

Search the forum for any topics that interest you, that way you will start to know what affiliate marketer(s) share the same interest and you can go to that person and ask questions that you may have and could not find answered anywhere on that forum. That is called networking!

Most of the people you will meet in the forum are already full time affiliate marketers. Many of them are successful affiliate marketers. When posting, always be courteous and professional in your questions as well as your statements.

Remember, you are asking these successful people for help in making you successful. Do not burn any bridges. Most affiliate marketers are people that will not hesitate to share and exchange ideas as long as the question presented to them is presented in a professional and courteous way.
By networking in forums, you will get a chance to know some very successful affiliate marketers which you will be able to “talk” to directly.

When you start posting, do not forget to create a signature for yourself. Your signature will tell the other forum members what you do. If you are networking in a forum that is not part of your affiliate program, just put something like the following: Thank you for letting me post my question, Curtis @ http://www.xxxxxxxx.com or Thank you for letting me post my opinion, Curtis @ http://www.xxxxxx.com. Do not, I will repeat, do not try to sell anything to your forum members. You can be banished from the forum. Knowing the forum rules is very important.

The affiliate manager of your affiliate program has a very high interest in your success. Now there is a person who has a wealth of knowledge you can tap into, providing help with your promotions and marketing ideas. Never, ever be hesitate to email your affiliate manager. The affiliate managers livelihood and the products is related directly to your success. The affiliate manager can even direct you to the right successful forum members to contact for advice.

You will run into a lot of webmasters by being an active member of various affiliate forums but that does not mean you have to limit your contact to just those. A well written professional email to a webmaster can invoke a response and if done properly the results will almost always be positive. As you grow your business, relationships with other webmasters will be very important. They can provide vital linking partnerships and could be potential partners for future projects.
